Canadian gold coins or the Canadian maple leaf gold coins by the Royal Canadian Mint

As a follow up on my series on gold coin investing for portfolio diversification I have started looking at all sorts of Gold coins and one of those gold coins which I have recently bought are the Canadian Gold coins or as they are called the Canadian maple leaf Gold coins.

Brief Introduction on gold coins by the Royal Canadian Mint

These gold coins have been produced by the Canadian mint since 1912 and they are produced
Canadian Mint introduced the first one ounce gold coins of one ounce weight in 1983 and these have the purity value of 99.99%. This value means that there are very less impurities in the gold coins and hence the value of the gold coins will be very close to the actual value of gold.

The Maple leaf Gold has been there for now quite many number of years and they have six various denomination for the Maple Leaf Gold coins and these are

One ounce – Face value of 50 dollars.
½ ounce – Face value of 20 dollars
¼ ounce – face value of 10 dollars
1/10 ounce – face value of 5 dollars
1/15 ounce – face value of 2 dollars
1/20 ounce – face value of 1 dollar

Here is what you should know which impacts the price that you pay. In general the Canadian maple leaf coins are given to the dealers at 3% premium over the prevailing rate of gold and then these dealers add the overhead costs like distribution costs etc. So in all you pay about 4-5% extra or premium over the prevailing gold price.

However that said the bigger the coin you buy the lower is the premium and vice versa.
There are other collectors items from the Royal Canadian mint which are the
$20 commemoratives and the $50 Mounties or the $100 commemoratives as well as the $200 commemoratives.
